The energy and ingenuity which the young Brontes put into these magazines at a time when Charlotte was only fourteen must amaze us. The tiny handwriting, the despair of the modern researcher, was an attempt to imitate real print, although the Brontes were always economical with paper. Articles about painters and actual illustrations in the magazines show their interest in art. Branwell tried to become a portrait painter, and at one stage Charlotte was working up to nine hours a day practising drawing.
It is also unlikely that without the previous apprenticeship in writing the Brontes would ever have been able to write the novels that they did. Attempts have been made to fit all the stories written by Charlotte into a consecutive pattern. The fact that Branwell as well as Charlotte was involved in the stories, that they involved verse as well as prose, and that both Branwell and Charlotte shuttled to and fro in time and space, reviving or killing off a character as it suited them, makes such an attempt virtually impossible.
9 Charlotte must have at first sight seemed a poor substitute, and there must have been a certain rivalry and resentment between the two siblings, although this rivalry produced fruitful literary results. After leaving Cowan Bridge Charlotte remained at home for five and a half years. We have only one letter of hers during this period. She and her brother and sisters did begin writing at this time, and the writing as well as the high opinion that was formed of her work at her next school shows that the education she received at home was a good one.
