The first strike of Japanese labour occured in April 1899 when the Peruvian managers of a sugar plantation attempted to prevent migrants from buying their supplies anywhere but at the plantation store with its inflated prices. Two-thirds of the 150 Yamaguchi migrants were subsequently fired in June 1899. There were also incidences of violence against Japanese migrants and a high level of death from disease. Many of those who remained wanted to head directly back to Japan but no vessel was available.
